The Awards, Scholarships, and Honors committee is responsible for developing and overseeing programs within the College that exist to recognize excellence in the work of current and potential students, faculty, staff, and partners and ensuring that those activities are undertaken a fashion that is consistent with the goals and values of the College as whole. This includes, but is not limited to, selecting recipients for college-wide awards and honors; working with program committees to select recipients for program specific awards; nominating (or working with the appropriate parties to nominate) faculty, staff, students, and partners for University or external awards and honors; working with the Development Officer to develop new awards and honors.

Requested Actions for 2015-2016
In addition to the general activities associated with fulfilling the committee’s purpose (as described above), it is requested that the Awards, Scholarship, and Honor committee identify 5 or more actionable projects that would significantly increase the scale and stature of the iSchool’s efforts to recognize the accomplishments and potential of current and potential students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners, and work with the appropriate parties to complete those projects. These projects might include, but should not be limited to, a review of existing award programs to ensure that they are contributing to the overall goals of the iSchool’s programs the College as a whole; development of processes for nomination of faculty and students for professional or research awards granted by the University or other organizations; development of additional awards focused on strategic priorities of the College.
The projects should be identified by mid-Fall and communicated to the College to allow them to be completed during the 2015-2016 academic year.
Other Responsibilities and Requirements
The chair is responsible for conducting regular meetings and ensuring that all open meetings are included in the iSchool Calendar so that interested parties may attend (send Daisy Mason the meeting dates, times, and locations to get them added to the iSchool Calendar).
The chair is also responsible for communicating with the College about the committee’s activities. Activities to accomplish this can include, but need not be limited to:
- Distribution of meeting minutes through the College intranet
- Providing timely updates to the Dean for inclusion in the weekly College update
- Distribution of a monthly update (if this is appropriate, please coordinate with Daisy Mason to schedule distribution of the regular committee update)
- Conducting open meetings or briefings on specific topics for interested faculty, staff, and students

iSchool Announces the Winner of the 2016 Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award
The Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award recognizes an outstanding student in the school library program who has made particularly innovative and/or impactful contributions within a school library environment. The winner receives a $1,000 award and must be nominated by an iSchool faculty member.

Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Project
The Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Project is presented to an iSchool student for an outstanding design or development project completed for an iSchool course. Projects must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights into development or design or displays excellence in applying existing state-of-the-art methods and knowledge.

Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Doctoral Student Paper
The Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Doctoral Student Paper is presented to a doctoral student who has had an outstanding full-length paper accepted and/or published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference between January 2015 and December 2015. While faculty members may be co-authors on these papers, the doctoral student MUST be the first author.

Laurence B. Heilprin Award
The Laurence B. Heilprin Award is presented to an iSchool student or a group of students (which includes at least one iSchool student) for an outstanding paper on a topic in library and information science which has been written for an iSchool course. Papers must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights, incorporating original research, and/or analyzing existing information in new ways.

Simmona Simmons Best Student Paper on Diversity Award
The Simmona Simmons Best Student Paper on Diversity Award is presented to a graduate student or a group of graduate students for an outstanding paper which has been written for an iSchool course and which focuses on any aspect(s) of diversity. The iSchool embraces a broad definition of diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, socio-economic status, education, geography, language, literacy, sexual orientation, and national origin, among other factors. Papers must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights on diversity issues, incorporating original research, and/or analyzing existing information in new ways.

Winners of the Mary Edsall Choquette Study Abroad Awards Announced
Spring 2016: Two iSchool students have been selected to receive a Mary Edsall Choquette Study Abroad Award for Dr. Barlow’s and Dr. Weeks’ Summer 2016 Study Abroad Program “Great Cathedral Libraries of England” (INST 729E): Avery Boddie (MLS – Individualized Program Plan) and Kevin Delinger (MLS – Archives and Digital Curation). Maryland’s iSchool Announces Winners of Annual Scholarship Competition
Thirteen students from the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies, Maryland’s iSchool, have been awarded scholarships in the 2015-2016 scholarship competition. All scholarship award winners will be recognized during the College’s commencement ceremony, to be held on May 20, 2016.

Helen A. Tegnell Scholarship
Established in December 1982 by a donation from Col. and Mrs. Russell M. Tegnell in memory of their daughter, Helen A. Tegnell, to provide financial assistance to worthy students enrolled in the MLS or PhD programs in the College of Information Studies.

Noyes Library Association Scholarship
Designated for a student with demonstrated financial need and an interest in children’s librarianship, this scholarship was established in April 1988 by the Noyes Library Association of Kensington, Maryland.
